The second quarter of 2026 was marked by a strong upward movement in Butadiene Prices. Europe experienced some of the largest increases, while the USA also recorded a major rise. Asian markets increased as well, although the movement was generally more moderate than in Europe.
The important point is that butadiene does not move in isolation. Its production is closely connected with steam crackers and the cost of feedstocks such as naphtha. India recorded an even stronger quarterly increase of around 41.84%. FOB Calcutta prices climbed steadily during Q2 as higher crude oil and naphtha-linked feedstock costs increased the overall cost structure.
Demand from synthetic rubber and polymer buyers helped support the market at elevated levels. But in June, procurement became more cautious and prices declined by around 6.16%.
The Indian market therefore followed the wider Q2 pattern: a strong rise followed by a noticeable correction.
Japan and Malaysia Reflected Higher Import Costs
Importing countries also felt the impact of rising prices in exporting markets.
In Japan, CIF Yokohama prices for butadiene imported from South Korea increased by around 38.99% during Q2 2026. Since South Korean FOB prices rose strongly, the higher costs were passed into Japanese import valuations.
Demand from synthetic rubber and polymer buyers kept prices elevated through much of the quarter. But when South Korean prices corrected in June, the effect was also seen in Japan. Japanese import prices declined by approximately 16.20% during the month.
Malaysia experienced a similar situation. CIF Penang prices for material imported from India increased by around 35.23% during Q2. Higher Indian export prices were passed through into Malaysian import valuations.
Demand from synthetic rubber and chemical buyers helped maintain elevated prices. In June, Malaysian prices declined by approximately 5.88% as the correction in the Indian market moved through to import values.
These examples show an important feature of international commodity markets: a price change in one major exporting market can quickly affect buyers in another country.
China Showed a Different Pattern
China presented an interesting contrast because its import and domestic markets behaved differently.
CIF Shanghai import prices increased by approximately 39.45% during Q2 2026. This was largely connected with the increase in South Korean FOB prices and the higher feedstock costs behind those prices.
However, Ex-Shanghai domestic prices increased by a more contained 21.36%.
One reason for this difference was steady local cracker capacity, which helped keep the domestic market movement more moderate compared with imported material.
Even so, both segments reached elevated levels during the quarter. In June, both experienced a sharp correction. CIF Shanghai prices declined by around 16.34%, while Ex-Shanghai domestic prices fell by approximately 15.58%.

The USA recorded a Q2 increase of approximately 51.85%, placing it among the markets with the strongest quarterly growth.
CIF Houston import prices were affected by higher Dutch export prices, while domestic naphtha-related feedstock costs also added pressure. Tight supply conditions helped keep valuations at high levels during the quarter.
The market then experienced a significant correction in June. Prices fell by around 17.04% as buyers reduced procurement considerably.
