One year ago, Georgia State won a single game all season, and it came against an FCS opponent. Today the Panthers are 4-1 and walking into Harrisonburg to face an unbeaten James Madison team that has the entire Sun Belt looking up at it.
It's one of the more interesting storylines on the college football calendar this week, and the point spread says most people aren't buying the turnaround just yet.
The Setup
Georgia State visits James Madison on Saturday, October 17, at Bridgeforth Stadium, with kickoff set for noon ET. The Dukes are 5-0 and sit as heavy home favorites, laying roughly two touchdowns. The total is high, around 58 points, which hints that the market expects points to be scored on both sides.
James Madison Is a Different Program Than Last Year
The Dukes are coming off the best season in program history: 12-2, an unbeaten run through Sun Belt play, a conference championship, and a College Football Playoff appearance. That's a tough act to follow, and there's a new voice running the show. Billy Napier, who spent four seasons as head coach at Florida after building Louisiana into a Sun Belt powerhouse, is in his first year in Harrisonburg.
So far, the transition looks seamless. JMU is unbeaten, was picked to win the East Division by a wide margin in the preseason coaches' poll (11 of 14 first-place votes), and returns standouts like offensive lineman Zach Greenberg, defensive lineman Amar Thomas, and running back George Pettaway. Home games at Bridgeforth have long been a difficult place for visiting teams to play, and a perfect record only adds to that.
Georgia State's Remarkable Turnaround
Now for the other side of the story. Georgia State was picked to finish seventh in the Sun Belt East this year, and the Panthers weren't expected to do much. They'd lost 11 games a year ago, hadn't had a winning season in a while, and had no players on the preseason All-Sun Belt teams.
Instead, third-year coach Dell McGee has the Panthers at 4-1. Redshirt senior quarterback Cameran Brown, a Warner Robins, Georgia native, is the lone returning All-Sun Belt selection from last season, and he's been the face of the resurgence.
That's a massive swing in a single offseason, and it raises the question that makes this game so intriguing: is Georgia State's turnaround the real thing, or is this the week the Panthers meet a team that's simply on another level?
The Matchup That Could Decide It
A few things will matter on Saturday:
- Early downs. Can JMU win first and second down and keep Georgia State's offense stuck in obvious passing situations?
- Pressure vs. escapability. Georgia State's ability to avoid negative plays and create explosive ones against a stout Dukes front is the biggest swing factor for the Panthers.
- Red-zone finishing. In a game with a total this high, who turns drives into touchdowns instead of field goals may matter more than yardage.
- Noon kickoff, hostile crowd. Road teams in Harrisonburg don't get many breaks.
Underdog Value or Just Too Big a Gap?
A spread north of 12 points with a moneyline that pays out big on the visitor is the kind of number that makes bettors pause. On one hand, JMU is the better team on paper by a wide margin. On the other hand, two-touchdown spreads can be tough to cover, and a team that just went from 1-11 to 4-1 clearly isn't playing like its old self.
We ran the numbers on both sides and landed on a pick with real conviction, complete with the moneyline, expected value, and edge that our subscribers see before kickoff.
