A practical guide to networking for investment banking jobs, with message templates, LinkedIn tips and ways to use alumni and your investment banking course network.
In investment banking, many openings come through referrals and conversations rather than job portals. Learning to network well is a skill that sits alongside the technical training in an investment banking course.
Why networking matters
Banks receive large numbers of applications. A short, thoughtful conversation can help your profile get noticed, and it helps you learn what the work is really like.
Step 1: Build a clean LinkedIn profile
- Use a clear photo and headline, such as your degree plus finance focus.
- Add your training, models and projects.
- Keep the summary short and factual.
- Match your profile to your resume.
Step 2: Identify the right people
- Alumni of your college or institute working in banks, advisory firms or research
- Faculty and mentors from your investment banking course
- Professionals at firms you are targeting
- Peers who recently moved into finance
Step 3: Write a short outreach message
Keep it to a few lines: who you are, the connection, one specific question and a request for a brief call. Do not ask for a job in the first message.
Example structure:
- Greeting and one-line introduction
- The common link, such as the same college or institute
- A specific, easy question about their role or path
- A request for ten to fifteen minutes at their convenience
- A polite thank-you
Step 4: Prepare for the call
Research the person and the firm, prepare three questions and keep the call short. Listen more than you talk.
Step 5: Follow up
Send a thank-you note within a day, mention one thing you learned and keep in touch occasionally with relevant updates.
Do and don't
- Do personalise every message
- Do be respectful of their time
- Do not send mass copy-paste messages
- Do not ask for confidential information
- Do not push for referrals too early
Referrals
If a conversation goes well, you can ask whether they would be comfortable sharing your profile with a recruiter. Many will help once they have seen your preparation.
Track your outreach
Keep a simple sheet with names, dates, follow-ups and notes.
Pair networking with skills
Networking opens doors, but your modelling and interview performance decide the outcome. Complete your projects before reaching out widely.
